Taking A Firearms Class To Improve Yourself And Get A Permit To Carry Your Gun

If you want to buy a handgun or pistol and carry it for protection but are not an experienced shooter, taking a firearms class that offers classroom training and shooting time on the range is an excellent place to start. There are some things to look for when in a class, and finding the right one will make a difference in the experience you get from it.

Finding Classes

Firearms classes are typically taught by instructors that have been certified in the state and have a background in firearms, law enforcement, or military training. The classes can vary in content depending on what you are looking for, but a permit to carry class will have some specific sections outlining the laws in your area.

Often the firearms class includes a specific number of hours in the classroom and on the range. You will also need to pass a final test to show you understand the laws and all the material presented and demonstrate proficiency on the gun range with your firearm. If the class does not include these elements, it may not be the best class for a new shooter.

Often you can find classes listed online or at the local gun shop and ask if they know where you can take a firearms class. Many times the instructors in the area are well known in the gun shops, and they may even leave information about classes for the owner to share with customers.

Contacting The Instructor

Firearms classes can fill up quickly, so if you find one you are interested in, contact the instructor and let them know. They may ask you for some information to get a feel for your experience level and ensure they put you in the best firearms class for your skill level.

Most classes also come with a cost to register, and the prices can vary from one instructor to the next. It is a good idea to ask the instructor what is included in the class and if you need to provide ammo and a gun to attend. A firearms class that allows you to shoot your personal firearm is nice because you get some range time with the gun you want to carry daily.

If the class is not listed as a permit to carry class, make sure you ask the instructor if it qualifies. Some training programs include basic instruction but do not take the training far enough for concealed carry. Others start at the basics and teach you all you need to know to go from someone that has ever handled a gun, to carrying a loaded and concealed firearm to protect yourself on the street.
